Certain variable names frequently appear in charts, maps, and tables across multiple projects within a workspace. On Pro plans, Lookups offers a way to assign colors to these variables, ensuring consistent visuals and accelerating the creation of new visualizations.
To begin assigning colors to variables:
When you click the Generate Colors button within a chart, map, or table, the app will first apply your defined lookups, and AI will assign the remaining colors as needed.
A single color can be assigned to multiple variations of a variable name. For example, in the illustration below, the same shade of yellow is linked to both "Liberal Democrats" and "Lib Dems."
In the example, four colors have been assigned to UK political party names. These colors will be assigned whenever the Generate Colors button is used and the specified names are detected.
To add new custom theme colors in your workspace, use the Theme page in the dashboard. Then return to the Lookups page to associate these colors with commonly used variable names.
By default, color-variable lookups are applied globally to all projects in a workspace. However, lookups can also be locked to a specific project.
To lock a color lookup:
Once locked, a lock icon appears next to the lookup, indicating the assignment is now restricted to the selected project.
When the Generate Colors button is used in a visualization, the locked lookup will only apply if the visualization belongs to the specified project.
Owner and admin users on the Pro plan have access to the Lookups page.
